Getting to Know Wyatt: Life Without Words

I realized I’ve shared so much about our journey, but I haven’t taken the time to really introduce you to the amazing little boy at the center of it all. So, I want you to meet Wyatt - my sweet, adventurous, music-loving baby.

Wyatt is 4½ years old and has a little sister, Sophia Rose, who is 1½. Watching their relationship grow has been incredible (and sometimes challenging, as I’ve shared before). Sophia absolutely adores her big brother, and while Wyatt enjoys his personal space, he’s been slowly noticing her more and more since she started walking.

What Wyatt Loves

  •  Animals – Wyatt has a special love for giraffes, dinosaurs, and really, any safari animals. We recently redid his bedroom in a dinosaur theme, and he absolutely loves it!
  •  Music – Nursery rhymes are his jam. Music lights him up, and he often echoes lyrics because he’s a gestalt language processor, meaning a lot of his speech comes in “chunks” or phrases he’s heard before—like songs!
  • Swimming – Wyatt loves to swim and be outdoors. His Grammie has been teaching him in her pool, and he’s doing amazing. I’m so proud of how confident he’s becoming in the water.
  •  Swinging – If Wyatt had his way, he would swing all day long. The swing is his happy place, and pulling him off of it to come inside is always a challenge!
  • Cuddles – One of my favorite things? Wyatt loves his mama. He’s happiest when we’re together and gives the best hugs and snuggles.

How Wyatt Communicates

Wyatt is mostly non-verbal, but he finds his own ways to let us know what he needs.

  • He’ll grab our hand and lead us to what he wants.
  • He’ll bring an empty cup or bowl when he’s hungry or thirsty.

We are currently waiting on his AAC device to help him communicate even more, but for now, these gestures say so much.

Playtime Favorites

Wyatt loves to play with hard figurine toys. He has this adorable habit of lining them up by size or color—it’s his own little way of organizing the world around him.

School & Progress

Wyatt is currently in his second year of preschool (2½ years total), and the progress he has made blows me away. Just 6–9 months ago, he was only making sounds—no words. Now, he’s starting to use some lyrics, phrases, and more sounds to express himself. Every step forward, no matter how small, feels like a huge victory.

Wyatt amazes me every single day. He faces challenges that many kids don’t, yet he approaches the world with so much curiosity and joy. From swinging for hours to singing nursery rhymes at the top of his lungs, he fills our days with love and laughter.

He’s teaching me - and everyone around him, how to slow down, appreciate the little things, and celebrate progress in all its forms.

Thank you for following along as we share our journey. I hope this gives you a little glimpse into who Wyatt is - a boy who is so much more than his diagnosis, and who makes my world brighter every single day.
