Bonnie and The Generational Attachment
Some people enter your life by chance. Others feel like they were always meant to be part of your story. For my family, that person is Bonnie.
Bonnie is my mom’s best friend from New Hampshire. The two of them first connected back in the 90s, during the early days of the internet ... back when chatrooms felt exciting and new, and long before catfishing and online predators were the concern they are today.
In 1997, when I was about 18 months old, Bonnie flew to Ohio to meet our family in person for the very first time. From the moment she walked into our lives, it felt as if we had always known her. The connection was instant, natural, like reuniting with an old friend we just hadn’t seen in a while.
That first visit was only the beginning. Over the last 25+ years, our families have woven together in countless ways. We’ve traveled to New Hampshire to see her. She’s come to Ohio to be with us. Bonnie has shown up for everything - every Christmas, every breakup, every wedding, every milestone moment that has shaped our family. She’s not just my mom’s best friend anymore; she’s family.
Now, as a mom myself, I see that same bond forming with my own kids. My children love Bonnie just as deeply as we always have. Wyatt, especially, took to her right away. He leads her by the hand into his little world, showing her his favorite things, sharing his passions the way he does with those he trusts most. He laughs with her, smiles with her, and makes it clear that in his eyes, Bonnie belongs.
It’s incredible to think about. Someone who lived across the country - a stranger my mom happened to meet through a computer screen in the 90s... has become one of the most constant, trusted, and cherished people in our lives.
Some bonds defy distance, time, and even generations. Bonnie is proof of that.
